  • quark star (theoretical physics n.): conceivable compact exotic star with ridiculous high temperature and pressure, forcing nucleons into a continuous state of free quarks.

  • SBU (corporate n.): Strategic Business Unit. Uses the popular but completely spurious "profit center" terminology: stuff like this is why reductionism has a bad name.

  • launch cadence (rocketry n.): rate of launch; metaphorical momentum; a weird marketing term that pops up in otherwise-technical discussion of SpaceX.

  • paralyzation (n.): process of paralysing. Just not a form I've seen before.

  • The ratio (Twitter n.): comments / (retweets + likes). Ratio < 1 is a sign that You Done Fucked Up.

  • Got the draws (AA. exclamation): As in, "been there, done that, got the draws..."

  • order-to-shelf, OTS (retail n.): fine-grained, "just-in-time" inventory management; relies on tracking exact quantities on the shop floor. Maybe perverse, stressful.

  • Green water (ecology n.): water from precipitation; stored in the root zone and evaporated, transpired or incorporated by plants.

  • Blue water (ecology n.): water from surface or groundwater. Irrigation, industry and domestic water use.

  • Grey water (ecology n.): fresh water required to assimilate pollutants to meet specific water quality standards.
